What began as a vision in their own basement has developed over decades into an internationally active family business.
Mediagon is a Swiss family business founded in 1986 with the idea of developing an environmentally friendly solution to limescale problems. Today, we produce high-quality limescale protection systems and operate internationally. What once began in our own basement has become a success story.
In this chronicle you will learn how Mediagon Kalkschutz came about, which milestones have shaped us – and why our history is still driven by pioneering spirit, conviction and sustainable thinking.
Thomas Engeli, founder and owner of Mediagon limescale protection, laid the foundation for the company in 1986. His vision of developing an environmentally friendly limescale protection technology that does not alter water quality led to intensive research and development work on the Mediagon technology. During this phase, Thomas traveled to Eastern Europe, among other places, and was able to personally witness the technology being used in a thermal power plant
“We equipped a total of 7 out of 32 thermal power plants in Eastern Europe with Mediagon devices, and after a week the limescale began to dissolve. The plant manager called our contact person in a panic, initially fearing that the concrete had come loose from the cooling towers, but after a brief investigation it was clear: it was limescale! So much of it that they had to remove it with a shovel. ”
Mediagon Limescale Protection already surpassed the 1,000 customer mark in 1987. That same year, the first branch in western Switzerland was opened. A year later, the company moved its headquarters from the basement to a new office in Horn.
“After our fourth child, my wife felt that our house should be used for living, not just working. Those were exciting years. We ran the entire business from the basement, handling everything from the phone to the books – even the warehouse was down there. But our house became too small, so I rented 200 square meters here on Bahnhofstrasse in Horn . I gradually rented more space and, ten years later, for the sake of location security, bought the entire building. Now I also rent out my own space to other companies.”
After the relocation, the company developed rapidly. In 1990, Mediagon technology received official TÜV certification, and the company established itself in several European markets. The first projects for industrial companies in Asia followed as early as 1992, and in 1994, business activities were expanded to North and South America.
"At the international trade fair for mechanical engineering in Hanover, we were able to establish many international contacts. People from all over the world came there, and Hanover was a good starting point for us. Later, we moved to Birmingham, Amsterdam, and other cities. We expanded our contacts, created a network, and concluded franchise agreements."
The family business grew steadily. With over 30 years of market experience and more than 107,000 customers, Mediagon Kalkschutz is now one of the established names in the industry. What's the recipe for success? For Thomas Engeli, there are three crucial factors:
"Hard work, a willingness to take risks, and inner conviction."
Since its founding in 1986, Mediagon has evolved step by step – from research conducted in its own basement to an international presence. The following milestones illustrate how our company has grown and which developments have shaped our history.
